Background
Columbus is the capital of and the largest city in the U.S. state of Ohio. Columbus is the fifteenth largest city in the United States of America. It is the fourth most populous state capital in the United States.
Columbus is considered to have relatively flat topography. The confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers occurs just west of downtown Columbus. The region’s climate is characterized by hot, muggy summers and cold, dry winters. Winter snowfall is relatively light, since the city is not in the typical path of strong winter lows.
Columbus is bisected by two major Interstate Highways, Interstate 70 running east–west, and Interstate 71 running north to roughly southwest. The city’s primary airport, Port Columbus International Airport, is located on the east side of the city, with several smaller airports in the region as well.
Commerce and Industry
Home to The Ohio State University, the Limited, Nationwide Insurance, Cardinal Health, American Electric Power, Ohio Health and numerous other companies, the Columbus economy is balanced by a combination of education, technology, government, research, insurance and health care as major employers in the region. The city has enjoyed continuous growth due to stable local employers, reasonably priced housing and an excellent location.
Columbus is home to the world’s largest private research and development foundation, the Battelle Memorial Institute; Chemical Abstracts Service, the world’s largest clearinghouse of chemical information; NetJets, the world’s largest fractional ownership jet aircraft fleet; and The Ohio State University, the nation’s largest campus.

In 2011, the city had five corporations in the U.S. Fortune 500, including Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, American Electric Power, Limited Brands, Momentive Specialty Chemicals, and Big Lots. Major foreign corporations operating or with divisions in the city include Germany-based Siemens and Roxane Laboratories, Finland-based Vaisala, Tomasco Mulciber Inc., A Y Manufacturing, Yachiyo of America and US Yachiyo, Inc.
Lifestyle
Overall, it was ranked as one of the top 10 best big cities in the country in 2010, according to Relocate America, a real estate research firm.
Columbus is the home of two public colleges: The Ohio State University, one of the largest college campuses in the United States, and Columbus State Community College. The public school system for the region operates 142 elementary, middle, and high schools, including a number of alternative schools. There are also a number of private schools.
Columbus is growing in recognition for its historic neighborhoods, booming arts and sporting district downtown, open attitude and a noticeably affordable quality of life. This city is young, smart and entrepreneurial with a growing creative community, every sort of urban and suburban neighborhood, quality schools, incredible health systems and short commutes.
The City is perfect for active lifestyles and is investing $20 million in a growing system of bike and fitness trails, connecting the suburbs and river trails to downtown where a new $44 million riverfront park system is under construction.
Columbus offers a variety of housing options, from the restored historic German Village, the Short North, condominiums downtown, to new neighborhoods around the city. Shopping, entertainment and dining choices include the Arena District, Easton and Tuttle. The NHL Columbus Blue Jackets, the Columbus Crew, the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Columbus Clippers are among the many choices for the sports enthusiast. Numerous fine golf courses are in the region, the area is also home to the Memorial Golf Tournament each summer. Museums, festivals, parks, live music and theatre make Columbus one of the best places in the nation to live, work and raise a family.
Neighbourhoods
Columbus offers excellent housing choices. Thousands of condo units have been built downtown in the past decade. The country’s largest neighborhood restoration project, German Village, continues to be a popular option for homebuyers seeking to live close to downtown. Victorian and Italian Village are among other neighborhoods following the same path. Clintonville offers New England style housing (along with many others). Newer options on the outskirts of the city ensure virtually any kind of housing is available to its residents.
